What Food Makes Arthritis Worse? (+ why)

Arthritic pain has been prevalent in older (50 and up) and younger people. Per the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention CDC,  Arthritis means inflammation or swelling of one or more joints. It describes more than 100 conditions that affect the joints, tissues around the joint, and other connective tissues. Specific symptoms vary depending on the type of arthritis but usually include joint pain and stiffness.

You have inflammation. Inflammation often causes stiffness and discomfort. Inflamed areas are hot and often painful red swelling that can result from injury or infection. You feel a throbbing pain in one or more joints and the surrounding area. 

Arthritic pain has been prevalent in older (50 and up) and younger people. A wide range of medications are available in the market, on and off the counter. You may have medicines like ibuprofen and Tylenol to more formal around to help you when you experience excessive abrupt intolerable pain. 

I researched this critical topic. A simple change of the wrong diet can relieve your pain. Let’s delve into what foods make arthritis worse and offer relief.

Avoiding sugary, salty, fried, ultra-processed food, canned and fast foods, and snacks cooked using unhealthy oil, food with high preservatives and sodium may worsen arthritis pain.

The listed foods are not in any particular order. However, it helps you choose your foods wisely with the knowledge that sticks into your mind. 

How about we start with the world’s favorite food-the, french fries?

French Fries:

It is a poor choice for anyone, especially those with arthritis, because cooking with vegetable oil by most adds trans fats and omega-6 fatty acids. They are with high sodium levels exacerbate arthritis pain by increasing inflammation. Instead, foods with healthy omega-3 fatty acids and proportionally of less omega-6 help relieve arthritis pain. Want to add some juicy fried chicken to your Fast Food (FF) order? It is a “no”!

Fried Chicken:

It contains saturated fats. The frying process generates Advanced Glycation End products (AGEs). It puts extra stress on the joints and enhances the risk of wear and tear. 

Foods on the high end of AGes are red meat, certain cheeses, fried eggs, butter, cream cheese, margarine, mayonnaise, oils, and nuts. Fried foods and highly processed products also contain high levels of AGES.

Need to enjoy fried chicken? Do you love the charcoal-grilled, seared version? Still a no.

Charcoal Cooked Meat:

Delicious and mouth-watering! Right. It is valid for certain foods’ fried, grilled, or seared. They may come in handy but are contaminated with AGES. Eliminating or avoiding them slowly is a wise choice for people with arthritis pain.

Excess Sugar:

Pastries, Bread, Bagels, chocolates, and candies- from ultra-processed grains and sugar, soda, and sugar added to fruit juices -all trigger inflammation in the body.

White Pasta, crackers, and Spaghetti Bread prepared from refined carbohydrates have sugar and cause spikes in blood glucose and increase inflammation in the body.

Ice Creams, cakes, and Cookies: It is the fun-filled birthday in the house. Kids are waiting with all their excitement with their invited friend and had their gifts, and poor you thinking inside may be few bites not to worsen your arthritic pain and starving for the yum. Nay, not your day.

Sugar-loaded Indian desserts and fried salty snacks can enhance your pain because  I was born in India and used to be addicted. 

Foods that trigger inflammation worsen the arthritis pain If you are a fan, avoid them from relieving your arthritis pain.

Salty Fried Indian snacks- Say no and abandon salty-fried namkeens, hot sweet and salty mixes, spice-coated peanuts, and the rest you see are priced low to sell in Indian stores and elsewhere.

Sugary Drinks: 

Regular use of sugar-sweetened juices increases body weight and obesity. These worsen the arthritic pain. 

Dairy products Dairy contains high levels of protein casein that triggers inflammation and pain in the joint. They may contribute to irritation around the joints.

Salt-loaded foods and preservatives: If you consume too much salt,  the high sodium levels may get retained in people with arthritis and disturb your joints. Snacks are a significant part of daily diet and add to office, home working, or school. Checking the sodium level while buying healthy labeled snacks helps your food selection. 

Butter and Margarines: Consuming butter and portions of margarine cause stiffness and inflammation as they are packed with AGES.

Peanuts and Peanut butter contain more omega-six than omega-three fats, which is terrible for arthritic pain. Are you used to adding a portion of margarine to your breakfast sandwiches? Instead, Replacing them with almond and almond butter help the pain relief.

Corn oil, vegetable oil? Both of these are bad. Instead, choose olive oil and avo oil. You need healthy fat in your body and joint lubrication. The highlighted ones contain trans fat and unacceptable omega-6 fatty acids. Both of these are bad.

Vitamin D Deficiency: A research study from the National Institute of Health (NIH) shows Vitamin D (25-OH-Vitamin D3) is highly prevalent in patients with Rheumatoid arthritis (RA). D deficiency is linked to diffuse musculoskeletal pain and has therapeutic implications. It may be related to the severity of RA.

Prevention and pain relief in patients with RA need Vitamin D supplementation.

Cigarette Smoking: Are you aware of the fact that cigarette smoking makes rheumatoid arthritis pain worse? Do we realize it can be a life-changing experience for people with arthritis or joint pain? The good thing is no matter when you quit smoking, your body will begin to repair the damage caused by smoking. Get help from hospitals and enjoy a smoke-free life.

Alcohol Drinking May Not Be the Cause of Arthritis Pain.

There is no conclusive scientific evidence, as per the most recent study, that drinking alcohol is the cause of Arthritis pain. As per the most recent study at NIH, drinking alcohol may not be the cause of arthritic pain as per several other studies; instead, it is the opposite.

These foods and lifestyle choices can increase Inflammation which is the primary cause of arthritis pain. 

It can grow worse with the choice of food you eat daily. All pain arises from inflammation and its response.

Beyond the food considerations, avoid overriding your joints that may aggravate joints.

Reducing your weight has a bearing on joint pain. Excess body weight can increase joint pain, placing a load on your knee. The excessive burden of weight may break down the cartilage supporting your knees. This explanation needs to be clarified by proof of science.

Inflammation, tissue damage, infection, cancer, and inflammatory diseases like arthritis accumulate fibrin. Fibrin is a protein from fibrinogen essential to blood clots and wound healing. Fibrin(ogen) exacerbates inflammatory joint disease.

Are we helping the fibrin or depleting the fribin build around our joints? Fibrin is a protein from fibrinogen essential to blood clots and wound healing. However, inflammation, tissue damage, infection, cancer, and inflammatory diseases like arthritis accumulate fibrin.

Avoiding sugary, processed, and fast foods can help lower fibrinogen levels help relieve arthritic pain.
